This monday I received a parcel in the post containing Christmas presents from my folks. I intend to write a post about some of the other things I received but I wanted to first give a quick shout out to my dad. As I tore away the wrapping and heaps of celotape used on one of my presents (it was obviously wrapped by my father) I was excited to find a copy of his newly published book entitled "Those Railway People". It`s a collection of articles that he has had previously published in railway magazines, about people of influence in the rail industry. He`s a massive fan of steam trains and if you are too please check out his website... http://railwaypeoplebook.com/ WELL DONE DAD!!!

Just after New Year Yoko and I decided it was about time to have a little excursion and see the southern, as yet unexplored sights of Ehime. I had read that Uwajima was famous for its seafood and being as Yoko loves seafood it would be a nice place for a days visit. There was a kind of indoor market at the port and there were various different products available from fishy stuff to chocolatey things. My eyes were instantly drawn to the chocolates and I bought some rum and raisin chocolates for myself. Yoko found some peculiar crab snacks which she bought for herself. They`re small and crunchy and smell really bad but somehow Yoko enjoys eating them. Personally I don`t understand why people eat anything from the sea. Crabs are like underwater versions of spiders, yet noone eats spiders. Shrimp are like underwater grasshoppers. Actually I have seen grasshoppers in some shops but I think they`re only eaten as a dare. Anyway we also checked out Uwajima castle. 。。 In fact we checked out two castles on our trip. This is Ozu castle. Of the two, I think I preferred Ozu castle. It has recently been reconstructed from original plans and photos and using the same techniques as the original. It also looks really cool because its black. It does have quite a steep slope leading up to it though, and this took Yoko and I a little by suprise. I was wearing some old shoes that were falling apart. Yoko was wearing some boots with the heel missing. I couldnt count the number of times Yoko slipped over walking up and down the path to the castle. If I hadn`t caught her every time I`m pretty sure she would have rolled all the way down again and have to start climbing from the bottom. We didn`t have so much time in Ozu because we planned to fit Ozu and Uchiko into the same day so we missed out on the old street in Ozu. We figured that there was an old street in Uchiko too so we could enjoy that one instead. My main reason for visiting temples in winter is to track down a free cup of amazake. It`s becoming harder and harder to do in the current economical climate, but I was able to get my hands on a cup for 100 yen at Uwajima. My hair in this particular picture looks like a wig but it is real. Most of the shops were closed in Uchiko so we treated it like a sample of what Uchiko could be like. It was a beautiful and tranquil little town and we both decided we should head back that way again sometime in the near future. They have a theatre which was also closed when we visited but as I recall it was over a hundred years old and it houses puppet shows and preformances. They also had a somewhat tired looking buddha at the far temple. I guess its not easy being a god after all. That was our trip to Ozu, Uwajima and Uchiko. I`m sure we`ll be back!!
Over New Year I took a short trip up to Kyoto to see some friends and to do a little sightseeing. While there I visited Heian shrine, went to karaoke and went to this unusual shrine above. Its a short walk from the station. Apparently it is a shrine for women to go to pray. It is over 1000 years old but interestingly an apartment has been built right over it. Presumably the ladies living in the apartment are receiving good luck continuously so it works out great for them. In the shrine you were able to buy these cute little omikuji figurines. They each had little holes cut into the bases where you had you pull out your fortune paper. My friend got a lucky one. Why not check it out next time you`re in Kyoto? You might get lucky too!!
Today Yoko and I visited Ikku shrine to wish for good luck in the coming year. There were so many people. Apparently double the number of last year turned up to pray and get this years lucky charms. We got our own charms and a couple of omikuji. I am usually quite good at choosing omikuji. According to mine, this year I will have good health aside from the odd cold or two, do well in my studies and have good luck in love. I couldn`t hope for more!! Come on 2012!!!
Mgrの年!”It's cool !! Dragon!!") |
